Better Digital Health Platform has been deployed at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) in a project to collect and analyse data in order to predict therapy results and find the best treatment options. The initial research use case will focus on immune diseases, with plans for an extension to cover rare diseases and cancer.

The aim of the project between Better and the renowned research institution Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) is to make pseudonymised data available for research purposes in a structured way in a central repository. LIH will collect data from hospitals, utilising an existing user interface for physician data entry and then transferring the data to the Better openEHR repository. The Better Platform is set to be installed, and initial training will be completed in the first quarter of 2023.

The LIH will initially use the Better Platform for four years, with the intention of a more extended collaboration and a gradual development of the project. In the second step of the project, they intend to include the usage of the Better Portal, improvements for data entry and user interface, integration of data from other clinical systems, a dashboard for data presentation, as well as data exchange with other members of the HiGHmed consortium.

Björn Lehnhoff, Managing Director of Better Deutschland, said: "We are excited to be working with the Luxembourg Institute of Health on this important project. The ability to predict therapy results and find the best treatment options will significantly impact patient outcomes. We are confident our platform will be valuable in achieving this goal and look forward to a successful collaboration."

Maximilian Fünfgeld, Chief Medical Information Officer at LIH, said: »Open data standards are the foundation upon which the future of medical research will be built. Without them, we risk siloed and fragmented information that hinders progress and wastes resources. With them, we have the potential to unlock new discoveries, improve patient outcomes, and drive innovation in the field. That's why at the Luxembourg Institute of Health, we have made the strategic decision to adopt openEHR and the Better data platform«.

The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) is a public biomedical research organisation focused on precision health and invested in becoming a leading reference in Europe for translating scientific excellence into meaningful patient benefits. LIH places the patient at the heart of all its activities, driven by a collective obligation towards society to use knowledge and technology from research on patient-derived data to impact people’s health directly. Its dedicated teams of multidisciplinary researchers strive for excellence, generating relevant knowledge linked to immune-related diseases and cancer. The institute embraces collaborations, disruptive technology and process innovation as unique opportunities to improve the application of diagnostics and therapeutics with the long-term goal of preventing disease. The LIH partners in the HiGHmed consortium, a European research project that aims to use information technologies and machine learning to improve medical outcomes.
