May 09, 2016  |  from: Heather Leslie

The China openEHR technical committee

The China openEHR technical committee has been launched by China Association for Medical Devices Industry (CAMDI) Medical Software Branch and Smart & Mobile Healthcare Branch in Feb. of 2016. The aim of the committee is to facilitate openEHR development and implementation in China, including localization, clinical models and system implementation.

2016 workshop of using and promoting openEHR in China

“2016 workshop of using and promoting openEHR in China” has been held in Shanghai on the afternoon of April 18th. The workshop invited Dr. Hugh Leslie and Dr. Heather Leslie from openEHR foundation, as well as 50 representatives from different areas in China, including scholars from universities (Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Chongqing University, Chinese Academy of Sciences), developers from companies (Philips, NIHON KOHDEN, Haitai Medical Information Systems, MedicalSystem Company and so on), IT engineers from hospitals (Chinese PLA General Hospital, General hospital of Ningxia Medical University, Shanxi Dayi Hospital, The Fourth Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine), and government officers (Jiangsu Institute of Medical Device Testing, Health and Family Planning Commission of Taiyuan and so forth).

Prof. Huilong Duan, the China openEHR Ambassador, gave an opening speech in the beginning to explain the purpose of the workshop and the importance of promoting openEHR in China; Dr. Heather Leslie gave a speech of “SMART DATA, SMARTER HEALTHCARE” to introduce the concept of openEHR, Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM) and openEHR smart data ecosystem; Dr. Hugh Leslie shared implementations and use cases of openEHR in many other countries, especially in Australia; finally Prof. Xudong Lu gave a presentation of the use case study of openEHR localization in China.

In the question-and-answer sessions following each speech, the participants understood more about openEHR, and most of them showed great interests in openEHR, such as clinical models and system implementation. At the very end of the workshop, there was a 40 minutes’ free discussion. Following are main conclusions:

  1. The methodology of openEHR could be used in China. Meanwhile, the extension to existing archetypes and templates should be further investigated.
  2. It is a better way to facilitate openEHR localization in China that collaborating with government sector which accounts for standard establishment, for example, National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People`s Republic of China.
  3. Precision Medicine is a hot topic around the world, including China. It will be interesting to start building archetypes in omics domain with international collaborations.
  4. The feasibility and performance issue of openEHR implementation should be verified in further case studies.

China mHealth and Medical Software Forum 2016

In April 19th, 2016, in order to facilitate the development of mHealth and medical software, “China mHealth and Medical Software Forum 2016” was held byMedical Software Branch and Smart and Mobile Healthcare Branch of CAMDI on 75th China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF). CMEF is the biggest trade show serving the entire value chain for the medical devices market in Asia Pacific, and there are hundreds of thousands professional audiences attended the 75th CMEF. The forum invited experts from international standard organizations, universities, hospitals and vendors to give speeches to share application experiences and discuss industry opportunities and challenges. As there are hundreds of audiences from standard organizations, universities, hospitals, media and vendors attending this forum, the venue of this forum is fully packed with harmonious and warm atmosphere. Prof. Huilong Duan, the China openEHR Ambassador, gave an opening speech. Dr. Heather Leslie, the openEHR clinical program lead, gave a speech named “SMART DATA, SMARTER HEALTHCARE” on this forum, introduced the concept of openEHR, Clinical Knowledge Manager(CKM) and openEHR smart data ecosystem, which received intense responses from audiences. Lots of participants showed great interest in openEHR and were willing to take participate in openEHR localization in China.

Modelling Tutorial in Zhejiang University

After the forum, Dr. Hugh Leslie and Heather Leslie accepted Prof. Xudong Lu’s invitation and visited Biomedical Informatics Lab of Zhejiang University (ZJU) in April 19th of 2016. During the visit, Prof. Lu gave an introduction of the BMI Lab, including research interests and major outcomes. Aiming at openEHR research, the ZJU openEHR research team gave demonstrations of current openEHR research project, including a CDR system based on openEHR, an openEHR archetype/template editor and an application designer supporting end users directly design applications using templates. Whereafter, Dr. Hugh Leslie and Heather Leslie helped the research team reviewed the localized archetypes built by ZJU and had a deep discussion on how to promote clinical modelling in China, including methodologies and implementations.

The discussions were also extended to possible collaborations, including: open-sourcing the current ZJU’s web-based archetype/template editor; a use case of interconnecting the EHR data between projects of China and Australia; collaborating on designing archetypes for omics data
